The Psychodynamic Approach

Difference in the leader follower relationships

In the Psychodynamic approach leaders would often encourage their followers to face their fears and to stop anxiety by motivating them. Leaders do that so that followers can find their inner self. In the situational approach, leaders adapt their style to demands of the followers, so leaders tend not to push their followers to do something they think the follower cannot do.

In the Psychodynamic approach, leaders motivate their followers by determining the followers behavior. In the situational approach, the leaders look at the competence and commitment level of their followers and then they decide to either coach, support, delegate, or direct.

The Psychodynamic approach is mainly supportive due to the fact leaders they help their followers find their inner self.

Situational and Psychodynamic

As we know, the situation approach focuses on how effective leaders should be able to adapt to a person demands in different situations. Great leaders show a strong degree of flexibility. Leaders adapt to the followers by the level of the followers competence and commitment.

Leaders are complex and are able to adapt their style to match the developmental levels of followers. Leaders should first be able to recognize and read others feelings and skill level to determine what kind of style should be used.

The Behavioral Theory in short

The behavioral theory emphasizes the behavior of the leader. It focuses exclusively on what leaders do and how they act. It is a very leader centered theory) There are two general kinds of behaviors: task behaviors and relationship behaviors. Task behaviors facilitate goal accomplishment. Relationship behaviors help subordinates feel comfortable with themselves, each other, and the situation. It helped develop into the psychodynamic theory because it is a heuristic approach- leaders can learn a lot about themselves and how they come across to others.

Comparing Continued

The psychodynamic approach also focuses a lot more on the interaction between leaders and followers, and less so on the leader, much like the behavioral approach. Certain styles of leadership work better for certain followers.

Comparing Behavioral and Psychodynamic

the psychodynamic theory approach is about modifying your type of leadership and teaching leaders to adapt to their followers being aware of their personality types. The approach also mentions giving specific individuals with specific personality types certain types of tasks. In the behavioral theory you have to modify your type of leadership depending on your type of follower. This is very similar to psychodynamic where instead of modifying your behavior you modify your task.
